Method: live DataForSEO mobile SERPs captured 2026-10-06 for attic insulation installation [city] in Los Angeles, Phoenix, Dallas and Houston. The top 2 real contractor sites per market were deep-profiled at source level — structure, offers, CTAs, chat, schema, tracking. Directories, forums and lead-gen marketplaces were skipped and logged in the SERP Landscape. Every claim below carries its source site.
1. Google showed no local pack at all — AI Overview and directories own the page, and the winnable layers are organic and the AI citation. All four captures returned zero local-pack results: an AI Overview plus cost-driven People Also Ask sat above organic, and 17 of 33 organic listings are directories, lead-gen marketplaces or forums (Yelp, Modernize, Expertise, Angi, HomeAdvisor, Houzz, Reddit). That makes this the first study in the series where the map pack isn’t even the battlefield — the job is winning organic, feeding the AI Overview with citable cost/rebate content, and keeping a GBP ready for when a pack appears. Nobody profiled owns the local result set.
2. Every PAA box is a cost question and almost nobody answers it. “How much does it cost to install attic insulation in Los Angeles / Phoenix / Houston” tops every market’s PAA. Only Arizona Energy Efficient Home publishes real project ranges ($2,500–$4,500 for air sealing + insulation), Goettl anchors “Attic insulation as low as $3,499” (and Angi’s third-party data answers Dallas: $1,753–$2,578). Everyone else says “free estimate” and lets the AI Overview answer with someone else’s numbers. Cost-by-attic-size content with local R-value guidance is the click the whole SERP is begging to give away.
3. Rebates and tax credits are the offer engine — and in Phoenix they are the market itself. Atticare USA runs a site-wide “Save Up to $1200 — Home Efficiency Federal Tax Rebate” banner plus 7 financing partners (“no credit score programs”, 0% for 12 months same-as-cash); Arizona Energy Efficient Home sells the full utility-rebate concierge (“Up to $14K… We Handle It All” for SRP/APS/Efficiency Arizona — Phoenix related searches literally include “SRP insulation rebate”); USA Insulation’s promo strip stacks a free attic with whole-home work, a 30% tax credit up to $1,200 and low monthly financing. The winner in this niche sells the rebate math, not the R-value.
4. Job-record proof pages are the SEO moat — and warranty terms are the trust currency. Atticare USA’s /project/ archive (997 pages — job record WO-numbers, materials “R-38 16in Fiberglass Batts”, dates, before/during/after photos, “Around the neighborhood” links, 3 city-voiced FAQs) ranks a Burbank job page for a head “installation” query. The Attic Insulation Specialists counter with “No Deposits — You don’t pay a penny until the job is completed to your satisfaction!” plus “10-Year Warranty on services + Lifetime Warranty on insulation” and CSLB # 1139733 printed beside it; Energy Attic guarantees your AC unit for a year. Documented jobs + named warranty terms beat review counts in this trade.
5. Franchise page farms and sloppy templates both rank — the clean single-market site is the differentiator. Goettl’s 201-page service matrix leaks template copy (“Reno Excluded!”) and carries zero SRP/APS rebate content in the one market that runs on rebates; USA Insulation’s city kit shows visible [city-state] token bugs and raw CMS JSON leaking into promo cards; Spray Foam Genie runs 1,000+ programmatic <keyword>-<city>-<state> slugs with no phone number anywhere and testimonials that are all from Milwaukee; The Attic Insulation Specialists ship a title-tag typo (“Los Angleles”), an empty Specials page, /parse-error/ in the sitemap and a review-count contradiction (141 on the widget vs “over 1,500” in the copy). Not one of the 8 combines clean local proof with complete schema.

SERP Landscape

Term: attic insulation installation [city] — mobile, depth 10, captured 2026-10-06 (DataForSEO). This niche’s SERP shape is the story: no local pack in any market, an AI Overview + cost PAA above organic, and directories filling the blue links. The organic order carries the type badges; skipped entries are listed as context.

Map Pack — none returned

All four captures returned no Google local pack. Google answered with an AI Overview and a People-Also-Ask block made up almost entirely of cost questions, then handed the organic slots to directories (Yelp, Modernize, Expertise, Yahoo Local, HomeYou, Angi, HomeAdvisor, Houzz) and forums (Reddit, HAIF). Directory-map context names worth knowing: 911 Attic Insulation and Attic Wizard (LA), King Insulation (Phoenix), Koala Insulation of Dallas / Penguin Insulation / NRG Pros (Dallas), Top Star Air Pros / Lonestar Attic / Attic Texas (Houston). A strong GBP still matters — the pack can appear on other phrasings (“attic insulation near me”) — but in this study the battle is organic + AI citation.

Headline: 17 of 33 organic listings are directories, lead-gen or forums — and Google’s AI Overview is answering cost before any site gets a click. Franchise location-page farms (Goettl, USA Insulation, Spray Foam Genie, Critter Control) rank alongside mom-and-pops, proving the location-page pattern works — but their template leakage (token bugs, wrong-market testimonials, missing phone numbers) is the opening. The market splits by pain: LA = rodent proofing + cleaning, Phoenix = radiant barrier + duct sealing + SRP/APS rebates, DFW = radiant barrier + solar fans, Houston = moisture + pest.

Ultimate Attic Insulation & Weatherization Site Spec

Assembled from the best of all 8 profiled sites with the field’s shared failures excluded. Items marked gap are uncontested across the whole field.

1. Site Architecture

2. Homepage Anatomy (top to bottom)

  1. Promo bar: rebate/offer + socials (Atticare’s site-wide “Save Up to $1200” banner).
  2. Sticky header: phone + “Get a Quote / Book Free Inspection” + license number.
  3. Hero: H1 with service + city + years-in-business trust (“Since 2012” — Atticare).
  4. Review banner: rating + count (Atticare’s “Highly Rated With 1400+ Reviews”).
  5. Service tiles: attic / crawl space / other, each with its own CTA.
  6. 3 benefit pillars with CTA on each (Atticare: Rodent-Free Home / Healthier Air / Energy Efficiency “up to 24%”, each “BOOK TODAY”).
  7. Process section with named steps (Atticare’s 8-step: vacuum removal, OdoBan sanitation, mesh/foam/cement sealing, air sealing, new insulation, before/after photos).
  8. Trust band: No Deposits + warranty terms + license/insurance numbers (The Attic Insulation Specialists’ strip — the best in the study).
  9. Before/after job gallery linked to the job-record archive.
  10. Financing strip with lender names + speed promise (“approved in minutes”).
  11. Rebate concierge block (AEEH’s “We Handle It All”).
  12. Cost FAQ block answering the PAA questions. Final CTA: phone + form (photo upload + SMS consent). Footer: licenses, hours, offices, payment link.

Read the columns: Financing is the surprise full column — this niche finances as a rule (Atticare’s 7 named partners lead). Membership is empty everywhere except Goettl’s Smart Sadie (an HVAC-brand upsell) — the annual-inspection / rodent-proofing-renewal plan is uncontested. Booking is half-built (ServiceTitan, Housecall Pro). Schema has one bright spot (Atticare) and job-record pages are a moat exactly one company built. And the far-right column hides the field’s strangest failure: Spray Foam Genie converts on forms alone — no phone, wrong-state testimonials, 1,000+ slugs — and still ranks #2 in Houston.

Next Steps

  1. Format check: passes — same chrome, sidebar and section order as the HVAC reference report (dropsites-hvac-teardown.pages.dev); the map-pack table is replaced by a documented “no local pack” callout because that is what the captures returned.
  2. Template feed: the Ultimate Site Spec above becomes the Attic Insulation template upgrade list — job-record archive template (Atticare’s WO-number page), rebate/tax-credit concierge block (AEEH + Atticare + USA Insulation), no-deposit + written double warranty trust strip (The Attic Insulation Specialists), named-lender financing page, cost-by-size + R-value FAQ hub answering the PAA, photo-upload quote form with SMS consent (Atticare’s Gravity Form), process section with named materials.
  3. Recurring tier: annual attic inspection / rodent-proofing renewal / insulation-health plans are sold by zero of the 8 — Goettl’s Smart Sadie membership ($12.95–$19.95/mo) proves the model works in home services. Price the recurring tier against the field’s absence.
  4. Snapshots: DataForSEO pulls are point-in-time (2026-10-06). No local pack appeared in any capture this round — that can change by phrasing and by week; AI Overviews are volatile. Re-pull before comparing across time.
